TESLA'S ATTIC (The Accelerati Trilogy, Book 1), by Neal Shusterman

The story: A boy... a girl... a group of evil scientists determined to take over the world. The end of the world is at hand--but who knew it would start with a garage sale? When Nick Slate's family decides to clean out Great-Aunt Greta's house and celebrate moving in with a giant yard sale, they can't figure out why so many random people would want so much trashy old stuff. But this is just the start of the weirdness--it gets exponentially stranger when each piece of yard-sale junk ends up possessing a giant cosmic power that is destined to bring about the biggest disaster in human history.

Liz's comments: If you're a reader of Neal Shusterman's work, this book will surprise you. Most of his stories are slightly...skewed...in some way, and many of them contain some kind of social commentary, like he's expecting them to be discussed at a book club meeting. This one (maybe due to the contribution of co-author Eric Elfman?) is surprisingly straightforward and minus the "let's all think about this" element. So what's good about it for Shusterman fans? It's an action-packed read, more reminiscent of Rick Riordan than of the standard Neal Shusterman, and although it's aimed squarely at the MS crowd, it's a much better story than Shusterman's previous Dark Fusion MS stuff (not a fan of those). So yay for the Accelerati trilogy! It's probably a relief for Neal to...unwind...and write something a little less heavy than his other recent offerings.
