LINCOLN'S GRAVE ROBBERS, by Steve Sheinkin
The story: This is the story of the group of men
who decided to pull a heist that would shock the nation--they were going
to steal Abraham Lincoln's bones. Meet the counterfeiters, the con men, and the Secret Service operatives who brought them down back in the days when Secret Service was dedicated not to the protection of the President's person, but to the vanquishing of those who made and passed "coney"--fake money. (Because counterfeit money can bring down a nation's economy and well-being just as surely as can a war. Who knew?) They planned to hold Lincoln's remains for ransom, until they received not only a cash payout, but the release of the country's most notorious counterfeiter.

Liz' comments: This is a book to hand to the occasional reader who wants to read a true story, not just something "made up." It's well written, and full of interesting factoids: in 1864, half the money circulating in the US was counterfeit. Yikes!
