THE DOOR BY THE STAIRCASE, by Katherine Marsh

The story: Mary wants nothing more than to escape from the orphanage--so who cares if the old lady that comes to adopt her looks like a witch? Trouble is...Madame Z IS a witch, and the kind that eats children. Now Mary's really going to have to use her head (and maybe her feet) to keep herself and her new friend Jacob out of the witch's clutches--and out of her cook-pot.

June Cleaver's ratings: Language G; Violence PG; Sexual content G; Nudity G; Substance abuse PG; Magic & the occult PG; adult themes (being orphaned, black magic) PG; overall rating PG.

Liz's comments: I liked it. Hand this one to any kid looking for a witch story--or anyone looking for a redemption story (after all, even a witch can change for the good!).
